World Under-23 Championships 2006, Hazewinkel 20th-23rd July. British selectors have picked a compact but talented 11-boat team for this year's Under-23 World Rowing Championships, which start today in Hazewinkel, Belgium. Nearly all the women's squad have junior medals from last year's bronze-medal junior eight and quad. 2005 Scullers Franki Jus-Burke and Tina Stiller are joined by the eights stroke Frances Fletcher and Durham University's Louisa Reeve to make a new Under-23 quad. Jacqui Round, also from last year's junior quad, races with Lizzie Hodges in the pair. The lightweight singles titles won by Hester Goodsell and Zac Purchase last summer will both be defended: the women's by 2003 junior silver medallist Sophie Hosking and the men's by Adam Freeman-Pask. These two were fourth and seventh respectively at this year's British senior trials, which puts them at a good standard for this hyper-competitive event. The coxless four from Oxford Brookes University and Leander which out-rowed the Searle brothers' crew to win the Visitors' Challenge Cup at Henley has been kept together, which will take advantage of their racing experience. Several crews named in the team won Under-23 finals at Duisburg Regatta in June, including single sculler Alex Gregory, and half Imperial College's winning Prince Albert Cup crew, Ben Smith and Oli Moore now racing as a pair. So too did lightweight pair of Richard Chambers and Chris Bartley, from last year's Under-23 silver-medal quad. Stephen Feeney and Doug Perrin, the other half of their quad, also move to sweep rowing as anchors of a new lightweight coxless four. The coxed four includes half the Leander Men's Quad winners, and is coxed by Nick Brodie, steersman of the junior gold-medal eight in 2003. A composite student men's quad has also been put together.
