Professor Gabriel Dover
10th May 2005: The Evolution of Human Nature
One for all and all for one?
Gabriel Dover will argue that there is no biological support for fashionable ideas of 'universal human nature', forged by Darwinian selection. He will show that the path of development of an individual's form and behaviour is unique and unpredictable, given the absence of instructions in the human genome and the complex networks of genetic interactions from which an individual emerges. New biological discoveries render traditional definitions of nature and nurture as meaningless.
He will discuss the implications of the genetics of individuality for gender, race, the self, and freewill.
