Professor Les Iversen
12th November 2002: "Marijuana: medicine or narcotic?"
Les Iversen is Professor of Pharmacology at Oxford, and was previously Director of the Neuroscience Research Centre of Merck Research Laboratories. He has written a number of books, including most recently "The Science of Marijuana", and "Drugs: a very short introduction".
After alcohol and nicotine, marijuana is the most commonly used "recreational" drug in Western countries. A political and social debate is currently raging about the reclassification, decriminalization and medical applications of marijuana and other cannabis-based preparations.
Professor Iversen sets the scene with an explanation of the advances which have already been made into scientific research on cannabis, including the discovery of naturally occurring cannabis-like substances in the brain. Then the discussion begins: what is the scientific basis for the medical use of cannabis and what risks does this entail? How does recreational use of the drug affect users? How will attitudes to cannabis use change in the future? Come and join in, and letŐs hear your views.
