Professor Denis Noble FRS
11th July 2006: What is life? Biology beyond the genome
What is life? Not necessarily the genome itself, the basic genetic code which evolutionary biologists see as the code dictating how life behaves. Professor Denis Noble is a physiologist with a very different view, that the genome is a prisoner of the organism.
Noble argues that life is a complex web, interacting and feeding back on many levels, and uses musical metaphors to describe this complex system. An antidote to The Selfish Gene, this investigation into what life consists of will make a fascinating Cafe.
See "The Music of Life", Noble's book for more information. Copies will be available on the night of the Cafe.
