Dr. John Pannell
12th September 2006: "Sex, sterility and spite amongst plants"
Dr. John Pannell is a evolutionary biologist at Oxford University whose latest research to hit the news was the discovery of plant species apparently deliberately exterminating close relatives by swamping them with incompatible pollen. Covering subjects such as 'bad' pollen, hermaphroditic plants, and plant inbreeding, he will open our eyes to the way we see the leafy inhabitants of our world.
Attendees please note that due to an imminent happy family arrival
theoretically expected in late September (congratulations Dr and Mrs
Pannell) there is a tiny chance that events may overtake us causing the
Cafe to be suddenly cancelled over the weekend. If that happens no
further speaker substitution will be made, but an email will be sent out on the
Oxford Cafe Scientifique list to alert regulars, and Blackwells' customer
services will be told. If you hear nothing, assume the Cafe is on.
Come along and join us at 7pm in Blackwells Main Bookshop, Broad Street, Oxford.
