13th September 2005: Materials for Displays: a short story

The last two decades have seen huge new advances in the science of materials, with one high-profile area being that of display materials. Ever wondered what goes into producing the full-colour, lightweight displays for flat-screens, mobile phones, digital cameras, and Blackberrys? One of the answers is OLEDs - organic light-emitting diodes - a type of molecule which has taken material science by storm.

Dr. Chris Shipley works at the cutting edge of this technology and will introduce us to OLEDs, dendrimers, and where this amazing mixture of chemistry and engineering might be taking us. Roll-up electronic screens? Wearable TVs? Such far-fetched ideas are now sounding possible. Come and hear the science behind the science-fiction.

Come along and join us at 7pm in Blackwells Main Bookshop, Broad Street, Oxford.
