Tuesday 10th November 2009: "The Earth after us - what will the planet look like after humanity has gone?"

Dr Jan Zalasiewicz, a geologist at the University of Leicester, is a member of the Paleobiology Group, and has published works on stratigraphy, mudrocks and shale formation. However, for his recent book Earth After Us, he gazed into the deep future, imagining what the planet will look like 100 million years hence, when all trace of humanity will have long gone from the surface of the Earth.

Zalasiewicz uses this dizzying concept to explore how the geo-, hydro-, atmo- and biospheres interlock on such huge time-scales, and man's influence on the planet. Futurology and geology combined, an excellent subject for a Cafe Scientifique.
