Rowing Service Reporting: Commonwealth Regatta 2002

For those of the competitors looking at this, the chance, if you are on the medal dock, of being asked for a quote, are high, and higher if you win a gold, so get thinking about what you're going to say.

Commonwealth Quotes

M2-
Dave Kay (CAN, gold): "It was difficult. It was a long race with a headwind. We just settled into our rhythm. I wasn't going out to win or lose - just to put in a good piece. The conditions were similar to what we train in at home. We usually avoid rowing into a straight headwind when we can."
Geoff Hodgson (CAN, gold): "I knew the Australians would be pretty stiff competition. We're happy with the performance overall."

M2x

Peter Hardcastle (AUS, gold): "We feel great. We think it's a very strong team. Australia sent their whole men's national squad, except for the lightweights, to this Commonwealth Regatta. Some of the other teams are sending their development squads."
"The hospitality's been great. We're staying at Derby Hall. It's a great atmosphere, staying with all the other countries in the same place. Hopefully this leads to Seville with a good, positive chance."
Craig Jones (AUS, gold): "The race was quite good. We raced our normal race plan, like we did back in Munich in the World Cup. We had some really strong points in the race. It was quite unsettling conditions, but we did it pretty well. We did enough to win by a big enough margin."

W2x

Stacey Norwood (CAN, gold): "It's awesome. It's just like a dream. We were hoping to win, but we knew it would be tough. We knew the weather conditions were going to be quite testing with a heavy crosswind but we just kept our heads in the boat and just tried to pull as hard as we could and focussed on our own race. It turned out really well."
Laura Middleton(CAN, gold): "I feel fantastic. We could hear the men's national anthem playing in the warm-up area, and even then it almost brought tears to my eyes."

M4-

Cameron McKensie-McHorg (AUS, gold): "The conditions are difficult, but we just kind of plugged away. We eventually pulled away from Canada. They had a good race and pushed us all the way. You could say it went to plan as we won."
Robert Douglas (AUS, gold), on their chances in Seville: "I think we're going to do okay. we've done pretty well so far. We raced in Munich and got a medal in the eight - that's our number one event."

LM 2-

Erik Oinonen (CAN, gold): "The weather was nice yesterday, but the wind picked up today. But it worked for us today, and that's what counts."
Liam Parsons (CAN, gold): "It went fairly well. We executed our race plan fairly well, but the race conditions were tough - the wind made it more difficult."

LW 2x

Sarah Watts (ENG, gold): "Absolutely delighted with this performance, really chuffed. We've been aiming for this all season and it's fantastic that all the hard work and training has paid off. We''ve got what we wanted."
Fiona Gibson (ENG, gold): "We knew the crew from Zimbabwe would be quick, but we thought the Scots would be our main opponents. We managed to keep them at 1000m, which we haven't done before, so we decided to go for it. It was a long push for home from 1000m, but it was worth it. A medal is fantastic, but gold makes it even better."

M 1x

Mitchell Punch (AUS, gold): "It's great to come over to England to see how we do as a team - I had a good solid race. I'm going out to Seville to have a good race and see what I can do against the top guys in the world."

LW 1x

Kirsten McLelland-Brooks (WAL, gold): "I feel very proud to have got a medal for Wales. It was a good race - I'm very happy. I wanted to get out of the blocks first, and be first to 500m. This was a test before I go to the World Championships as I was ill and missed Munich. It was good to see how today went. I'd like to get to the A final in Seville."

LM 1x

Hamish Karrasch (AUS, gold): "I haven't actually been out in a scull for about 3.5 months. This morning was the first time I've been in this boat and I've done all right. I'm pretty happy."
"I won gold in the men's lightweight doubles yesterday and that's what I'll be racing in Seville. Today was a race I entered for a bit more practice."

LM 8+

Mark Watkin (ENG, gold): "We took it one stroke at a time. It all went to plan. It was a tricky headwind, but we held our stroke out. I had some natural nerves but I think we all took it in our stride. We've been preparing for six weeks for this, so I think it all paid off."
"Nottingham's been really good, really well run. It's all gone without a hitch so far."

LW 2-

Jill Lancaster (ZIM, gold): "Our performance wasn't so good yesterday, but we got it back today."
Georgina Simpson (ZIM, gold): "The pair hasn't been our main event this year as we've been concentrating on the double so we were doing this as an extra race. We've never raced any of these other crews - we didn't know what to expect."

LM 4x

Neil West (ENG, gold): "We're very pleased. The race went exactly to plan. We knew that we weren't to worry if we were behind at halfway as we were going to put in a big push over the last third of the race. That's exactly what happened - it was perfect."
Rod Chisholm (ENG, gold): "It's a great opportunity to come out and race under your flag and to come up against good opposition and to put in a great performance at the right time. We're happy as that's what we did today."

LM 4-

Stuart Thompson (RSA, gold): "It's great - it's a big achievement for us. We put a lot of work in, and set up a good standard for other crews to follow."
Rod MacDonald (RSA, gold): [Rowing in South Africa] - "it's progressing all the way. We've got two good men's and women's heavyweight pairs, we've also got a very good Under-23 lightweight four that won a medal in the Nation's Cup this year. Rowing is on the up in South Africa, it's going places."

LW 4x

Chantal Shalhoub (ENG, gold): "We knew that the other team boats were going to be really strong contenders. It was a question of who was really going to pull out all the stops. We had nothing to lose, we did our best."
Victoria Richmond (ENG, gold): "This is really a stepping stone for the GB team, to bridge the gap between club rowing and the British team. We feel like we've really come on - it's been a really successful season."

W 8+

Carolyn Rudden (CAN, gold): "We definitely pulled together as a team. It was a challenge, but we had fresh legs. Six of the nine of us had a race within an hour and a half, but we didn't even feel it."
Emily Boyle (CAN, gold): "We're looking forward to the World University Championships now. It'll be a new combination in our four so it'll be a challenge."

M 8+

Dave Matthews (AUS, gold): "The race went to plan. Full credit to the Canadians, they put in a real gutsy race. We were satisfied."
Cameron McKensie-McHorg (AUS, gold): "We've come here to get a good race preparation coming into the Worlds and it's been a great event just to practice our skills against some top quality opposition."
"We've really enjoyed ourselves... the course, the facilities, it's been put on really well."
