GB team for Poznan World Cup, May 7th-9th, 2004
Announced Thursday 21st April 2004
British International Rowing has announced its initial World Cup team, following the news earlier this week of a change to the men's coxless four. Several crews have been tweaked from last year's World Championships team, following the recent final trials in Hazewinkel. New entries to the senior squad include Steve Rowbotham and Alan Campbell, as well as promising lightweight sculler James Stephenson, whose results all year have been impressive. These crews are not yet confirmed as Olympic entries, and results in Poznan at the first World Cup Regatta will be of great interest to the coaches. They will also be important to those, especially former medallists, who have been edged out of the current squad by newcomers with better results. Two examples of this are Ed Coode and Kieran West, dropped from the eights group for now, and expected to race in a four at Duisburg two weeks after Poznan. However, if the eight does not fulfill its promise on paper, the likes of Coode and West may be first to receive a call-up. Oxford students Peter Reed and David Livingston, who outdid expectations to reach the A-final at trials, are rewarded with an opportunity to race their pair internationally as a second-string entry in Poznan.
