Kissing the amateur goodbye
The FISA Council proposes to replace the amateur rule by a new Eligibility Rule which reads: 'FISA World Rowing Championships and all international regattas shall be open to all competitors who are authorised to compete by their affiliated national federation and who are eligible within these rules.' The Council also proposes the deletion of 'amateur' from Rule 6 so that it will read 'An international regatta is a rowing competition, over any distance whether started abreast or against the clock, which is open to competitors from all federations affiliated to FISA. Changes are also proposed to rules 34 and 35. Rule 34 would read: 'Competitors may receive cash or other prizes for competition. They may also enter into sponsorship contracts provided these contracts are reviewed and approved by their national federation in advance, and that these contracts are in compliance with FISA rules, and in particular the advertising Bye-laws.' Rule 35 would read: 'There shall be no restriction imposed by FISA on payments made to a competitor from any source.'
Advertising appeal
The Court of Arbitration in Sport upheld FISA's new advertising rules adopted at the special congress in Sydney last February, rejecting the French, Italian and Dutch federations' case that they were invalid. But the court rules that the federations had had insufficient time to consider the rules, thereby putting the new rules onto the agenda for the congress in Aiguebelette and thus allowing further debate.
Kolliker resigns
Paul Kolliker and Paula Oyer have resigned after serving in the chair of FISA's media and marketing commissions since 1990. The commissions were merged recently, and a new chairperson will be elected in Aiguebelette.
