Henley drops the amateur rule

Christopher Dodd reports

The Stewards of Henley Royal Regatta unanimously decided to amend their Qualification and General Rules to delete the word "amateur" and introduce the concept of "eligibility" at their December meeting. A statement said that they have determined to take the lead from the International Rowing Federation (FISA) and recognise that the concept of the amateur status is no longer valid at the highest levels in rowing. FISA dropped references to amateur status from the preamble to its statutes at its September Congress.

Mike Sweeney, Chairman of Henley's management committee, said: "For historical and traditional reasons the Stewards reflect upon the passing of the amateur era with a sense of regret. However, the Regatta continues to be one of the most popular and attractive events for the top crews from all over the world and, as such, intends to remain open to all eligible categories." © Copyright Christopher Dodd, 1997.
