Issue 105 - February 1998
The World Championship gold medal-winning women's coxless four of Sue Walker, Alex Beever, Libby Henshilwood and Lisa Eyre were voted Team of the Year at the recent Woman of the Year awards. Matthew Pinsent presented them with their trophy at the awards, which were held at the Selfridge Hotel in London. The four were the first British open women's sweep crew to take a world title.
Lisa Eyre, stroke of the four, received the River Dee's Silver Oar for becoming the first international rowing gold medallist from Chester. She is the third recent winner from Royal Chester RC since their GB silver medallists, Richard Stanhope and Claire Davies, were similarly honoured. While all three now row with clubs on the Thames at Marlow, Molesey and Putney, they always return to their roots on the Dee whenever possible, a tradition appreciated by those they left behind.
