Official statement issued February 16th 1998

The ARA on Grobler

The ARA is unequivocal in the opposition to drug-taking in sport and indeed took a lead in the introduction of drug testing. It is aware of the allegations of drug abuse which have been made against coaches of the former East German Republic, now working here and worldwide, in rowing and other major sports. Our own Chief Coach Jurgen Grobler worked as a men's and women's coach in the GDR from 1972 until 1990.

We are completely satisfied that British rowing internationals are, and have been, free from any drug abuse. British rowers have proved negative in all doping tests conducted "out of season" by both the International Rowing Federation (FISA) and the Sports Council, and in international competitions including World Championships and Olympic Games.

Jurgen Grobler has worked as a High Performance Coach in Great Britain since 1991, for the past 6 years leading Britain's successful Men's Rowing Team. He has been personal coach to Steven Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent throughout that time, guiding them to two Olympic Gold Medals and four World titles in the Coxless Pair.

In the 1997 World Championships, Britain won four medals in the men's events including a gold for the coxless four of Redgrave, Pinsent, Cracknell and Foster, which Grobler coached personally.

Recent speculation, whilst not to be treated lightly, is rumour and comment that has surfaced from time to time over recent months. However given our own certainty of being a clean sport, and the success we have achieved under his coaching guidance, the ARA expresses full confidence in Jurgen Grobler as its Men's Chief Coach.

Look out for "What they said when the Wall came down" in the March issue of Regatta Magazine, 1998.
