Name the same as rowing goes 'open'
Amateur by name but not by nature was the theme of the June Council
Meeting when council members decided that the sport would go 'open',
deleting the word 'amateur' throughout the rules of the Association with
one exception the name would remain The Amateur Rowing Association. A
letter had been received before the meeting from the Scottish ARA
expressing concern over any action likely to be taken by the ARA to change
their name to Great Britain Rowing.
The Executive Committee noted the
concerns of Scotland and of other individuals who felt it was unnecessary
to change the name as the Amateur Rowing Association was an historic title
which should be preserved. The overall Council, however, decided that
further consideration should be given to the name in the future.
