Issue 111 - August/September 1998
Scotland retained the men's team event and won the junior women's event, while England won the senior women's division - by just one point over Scotland, and the men's junior category.
In the men's match, Scotland had five individual wins, in lightweight single; double and quadruple sculls; in coxless pairs and lightweight fours. Ireland won both coxed fours and eights, while England's solitary victory was in single sculls courtesy of Mike Webb.
The senior women's match went to the last of its eight races - quad sculls. Ireland's three-quarters of a length win over Scotland in this race, along with English wins in eights, coxed fours, lightweight coxless fours and coxless pairs allowed England to retain the team event. Scotland's British champion Katherine Grainger was the comfortable winner of single sculls, and with last minute substitute Ali Watt of Clydesdale, of double sculls, while Wallingford's Caroline Jones took lightweight singles for Scotland.
Four individual event wins - in eights, coxed fours, coxless pairs and quadruple sculls were enough for England to retain the men's junior division. It was in this division that Wales recorded their two event wins - in single and double sculls, thanks mainly to the efforts of John Gelling of Claire's Court, who was in both crews. Ireland totalled five individual event victories.
