FISA World Championships 22-30 August 1999

World Championships Finals, Sunday August 29

Christopher Dodd reports from St. Catharines, Canada

Britain's eight won silver in tight race with the Americans who led to halfway, trailed GB at 1500, and then answered Trapmore's charge with a fantastic last 500 which was three seconds quicker than the GB crew. Russia were third.

British crews won two silvers in non Olympic events on the final day of these championships. Jane Hall subbed into the lightweight pair after Jo Nitsch damaged a rib, and with Malindi Myers finished less than a second behind the US crew. Hall protested that the British boat had picked up weed. The umpire accepted the protest and proposed a re-row. The American federation protested and the case was referred to the FISA executive who overruled the umpire and allowed the result to stand.

The coxed four won silver in another tight finish against Americans, the two crews being way out in front of the rest.

Germany won both the men's and women's quads, Romania took gold in the lightweight women's doubles and the women's eight. The Danish lightweight four maintained their unbeaten record, and Italy won gold in the lightweight men's doubles, pair and quad.
