Henley Royal Regatta rule changes 1996-7
Winners get Goblets after all
When Redgrave and Pinsent won the Goblets in 1995, Matthew suggested that the Stewards gave the trophy to Steve for keeps because his seventh win passed Guy Nickalls's record. The Stewards stopped giving Goblets away in 1968, but are starting again in 1997. They will hand out the precious trophies to all who have won since 1968, and began with a special presentation to Steve and Matthew at their December meeting.
IRC crews allowed into Temple, Britannia
Crews who have competed in the Intercollegiate Rowing Championships (IRA) in the United States are to be allowed to compete in the Temple and Britannia challenge cups at Henley in 1997. The Stewards have dropped the exclusion clause introduced for the 1996 regatta on the grounds that the IRA regatta is well below the standard of the Eastern Sprints and the Pac-10 Championships. Contestants in these events and all others specified in Rules 1(f) and 1(e) continue to be barred.
Attention, Go at Henley
The Stewards have fallen in line with the revised FISA starting procedure introduced in 1995 of 'Attention', (raise red flag), 'Go'. The ARA is also likely to fall into line with FISA. Henley's traditional preliminary introduction of 'When I see that you are both straight and ready I will start you like this' will, traditionalists are assured, remain.
Coxswains shall wear jackets
The requirement of all coxswains at Henley Royal Regatta to wear lifejackets to conform with the ARA's safety code has been formally adopted as Rule 27(f).
Change of Henley steering rule
The Stewards have eased the ability of coaches to substitute coxswains at Henley by substituting the word 'oarsman' for 'competitor' in Rule 15(c)(ii). Their statement said that the revised rules on substitution had been intended 'to stop coaches from adjusting the composition of their crews between different events once the entry list had been published'. It went on: 'These changes caught out a number of clubs and coaches - as intended. However, one of the unintended effects was that the changes also tripped up a number of crews, particularly student crews, where they were pleading for permission to change just their coxswain.'
