Issue 95 - February 1997
Peterborough City Rowing Club place a high priority on the marketing and promotion of rowing as a sport for all, a policy which has led to an ever-expanding membership. This in turn has meant increased regatta success, the 1995-96 season being a record breaking one with 104 wins to date (58 of which are at senior 3, novice or junior level).
Rowing has been promoted principally through the media but also by improving links with schools and gaining the support of Peterborough City Council. Peterborough lacks a rowing school, but by raising awareness of games teachers and lending ergos to schools it has resulted in a number becoming involved in the club.
Ergos have also been used to good effect in the Queensgate shopping centre with 'have a go' days organised by the club. An open ergo competition raised £500 towards the Olympic fund.
Links with the city council led to a grant to pay for publicity posters for the August Regatta and the provision of a grandstand. Both additions raised the profile of the event in Peterborough.
The principal source of publicity for the club and rowing is consistent weekly coverage in two local newspapers. Television and radio features have also helped to heighten the profile of the club's two regattas and head race, as well as GB squad selection weekends.
