REGATTA OnLine - a note on faxing
REGATTA
 A note on faxing

 Last updated 27th September 1997

It is now possible to fax from email, ie to send a message via the Internet which will be delivered to a fax machine and translated into print.

However, it is important if you use this service to make sure that you do not accidentally send reams of text to the fax machine, so our fax numbers on REGATTA OnLine are not directly linked to their Internet addresses.

The email-to-fax network is managed individually by country, and a full coverage list is to be found here.   The UK is fully covered, thanks to Demon Internet, which delivers the faxes within minutes except at busy times.

When you send a fax, use the normal subject line, and make sure that you put a non-Internet form of return address, fax or phone number into the message. Bear in mind that the person receiving the fax may not know what email is.

Your fax will be preceded by a cover page stating that it has been sent via Demon Internet, with your email address and subject line on it. After that the message will be split into normal A4-sized pages.

If you have a correct "reply-to" line in your email account, then you will receive an email message from the Demon faxmaster, to tell you whether or not the fax was delivered successfully and how many pages it took.

The form of the fax is remote-printer.Name_Surname@xxxxxxxxxx.iddd.tpc.int

For instance, to send a fax to the ARA, number 0181-741-4658, you send it to the email address
remote-printer.ARA@441817414658.iddd.tpc.int

There are available lists of the international dialling codes, fax coverage by country, email-to-fax online help, and a number-checker to validate fax numbers. There is also a fax-by-form Web page for those who want a little assistance. If you have trouble with the fax system, contact Darren Nickerson, Oxford.
