Issued by Dorney Lake, 8th April 2004
Dorney Lake Trust, the registered charity operating Eton College's world-class rowing centre at Dorney Lake, is delighted to announce the appointment of Nigel Weare as a Consultant advising on community use development of Dorney Lake's facilities, with particular emphasis on the Trust's Junior Rowing Initiative. He succeeds Guin Batten, who has joined Sport England.
Nigel Weare has an ideal combination of high-level sports, coaching and administrative experience and comes to the Lake from Sports Coach UK where he was Education & Training Manager and lead officer for several sports. He previously worked for The Amateur Rowing Association, at which he was particularly involved with junior rowing and writing ARA materials. He is an ARA Gold level rowing coach, tutor and assessor.
His appointment is partly funded by South Bucks District Council with additional support from The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, The Cave Foundation and The Prince Philip Trust. These organisations are keen supporters of Dorney Lake Trust's remit to offer access to the Lake facilities to more local schools and youth groups and, later this year, to over-50s rowers.
Nigel's principal focus will be to ensure that all community sectors can enjoy the 400-acre Lake site as well as rowing, canoeing and triathlons (run, cycle, swim), he will be promoting activities in the park and arboretum and appreciation of the nature conservation area now being prepared. He is especially keen to develop Dorney Boat Club, recently the recipient of a Project Oarsome grant to purchase a fleet of racing boats and set up primarily for the young rowers graduating from the Junior Rowing Initiative, which introduces absolute beginners to rowing.
