Tuesday 27th July 2004

- (UK): It appears that Belsize Architects have won the competition to design the new University College Oxford boathouse (the old one, known erroneously as the "OUBC Boathouse", burned down in September 1999). There are details and three pictures on the Belsize website - if you can't scroll down, go to the website's home page and select Projects/Leisure/Boathouse in order to get the frames version which works better. Apparently the new boathouse will be slightly further east (downstream) than the old, to avoid disturbing the protected Eastwyke Ditch which has some voles living in it.
- I'm told that an expensive rate monitor was found at the Nat Champs eight days ago (UK). Anyone who has lost one can email Rachel Hooper.

Sunday 25th July 2004
- Coupe de la Jeunesse - results via CanottaggioService on the official Ravenna website (ITA), although these disagree a little with some of the reportage on Canottaggio Vero. For background about the Coupe see its official website, and I've put up plain quick-load files of the results and medal tables too, as the Italian files have been moving about a bit. I don't know the precise scoring system but it would be a surprise if Italy hadn't won the men's and overall events.
- Results of the Home International Regatta (ENG/IRL/SCO/WAL) are on the NWSC website. Overall result: 1st ENG 99 pts, 2nd IRL 93 pts, 3rd WAL 67 pts, 4th SCO 49 pts.

- The date of the 2005 Boat Race has been announced as Sunday 27th March, probably around 3pm. Terms finish at Oxford and Cambridge on 12th March and 18th March respectively next year, and cunningly, the 27th is Easter Day.
- Last week saw the Atlantic Challenge in Fishguard, where Bantry Bay gigs are half-rowed, half-sailed, in a week-long International Seamanship contest also involving ropework and man-overboard tests. No sign of who won yet on the official website, but the Fishguard website has pictures and movie clips from this year's competition.

- Year 2 of a new German format - the 400-metre Hamburg Speed Rows, on September 25th. The plan is fcontinuation of a or M8+, W8+, M1x, W1x, J8+ and J1x to compete against international crews (they say they have CAN, NED, GER, USA and perhaps GBR already signed up) and any European club crew which wishes to enter can do so without paying a fee, but must give 10 reasons why they should be chosen to race the internationals. There are 12 places in each event, and application forms in German on the website, along with information about last year's SpeedRow. English versions of the information and application form can be downloaded from here (78kb PDF files).

- Here's a rather unusual opportunity - Xeno Muller, Marnie McBean, Thomas Lange and Rob Waddell are holding a 2.5-day exclusive rowing camp on November 12th-14th in Newport Beach, California, USA, later this year. Xeno's looking to sign up other Olympic champions to join them, and the gold medallists will give lectures, coach on water and land, do video analysis of rowing technique, and organise lactate testing if required. More details on Xeno's site or ring +1-949-650-5021. [Hint to clubs - quick, ring Xeno and book a place, then offer it as a prize for a fund-raising event....]

- From the Ocean Rowing Society, Jean Lukes was picked up by the Canadian Coast Guard on July 11th suffering from 'extreme exhaustion', the Pink Lady crew are reasonably on target having done about a third of their distance in 15 days (Atlantic team record attempt), Anne Quéméré has now been on the Atlantic for 42 days, and Mick Dawson is now 72 days into his second attempt to cross from Tokyo to San Francisco. The real madman on the sea at the moment is Emmanuel Coindre, who is on his fourth Atlantic row, which would make him the first to cross an ocean twice in both directions - he is six days in. The ORS has issued a safety statement about ocean rowing. The next ORSARR race starts on 20th January 2006 and Woodvale Events are running a Doubles race in October 2005 and a Fours race in 2006, with an Indian Ocean race mentioned but no date given.
Thursday 15th July 2004
- Unless some kind of miracle occurs, it is obvious that the Beijing Paralympics will not include adaptive rowing, following the entry of just 14 nations for this year's Worlds. The deadline was 1st July for no fewer than 24 countries to enter adaptive crews at the 2004 Championships, and the shortfall means that the 2008 Paralympics will now not automatically include rowing. The federations entered for Banyoles are: AUS, BRA, CAN, CHN, DEN, FRA, GBR, GER, HKG, ITA, MAR (possibly), NED, POR and USA. What a shame.
- The "What It Takes" coffee-table book on the Boat Race has launched its own website, including a few of the stunning photographs this photo-essay includes. Ordering online is secure via the Third Millennium website.
- John Loghlen and Rosa Volz, who were running the Mongolian Sunrise To Sunset Marathon in aid of the Harry Mahon Cancer Research Trust (they are ex-CUBC/NZ rowers), did extremely well, finishing 3rd man (Loghlen) and 2nd woman (Volz), and the top non-Mongolians in their respective marathons. Official results are not out yet but will be here when they are.
Monday 12th July 2004
- Results for the Holland Beker Regatta (Netherlands) are under "Live" in the menu. In the singles, Tim Maeyens stunned crowds by beating world champion Olaf Tufte to take the men's trophy. In GB news there, the senior W4- beat the U23 W4- in both finals, ensuring that each four goes to one championship (the Banyoles Worlds and Poznan Nation's Cup respectively) rather than one crew doubling up.
