- I spy that James Cracknell MBE is taking part in a celebrity "Weakest Link" at 18:45 BST tomorrow (Saturday 30th July, UK) on BBC1. Any bets on the Crackster versus Anne Robinson? Update - he came third, behind Graeme le Saux (2nd) and Claire Balding (winner).
- I'm doing live-online race commentary for the A-finals of racing at the Coupe de la Jeuness this weekend (UK): bookmark this link which has details of the times of coverage. 11 countries are entered this year - AUS, BEL, FRA, GBR, HUN, ITA, IRL, NED, POR, ESP and SUI. Full entries by event here.
- A foundation has been set up in the name of Amy Gillett (neé Safe). It is linked from the Australian Cycling pages and will serve three purposes: to aid the recovery of her team-mates, promote road safety awareness and fund an academic/sporting scholarship programme for promising female cyclists. Those who knew Amy in her rowing days may want to contribute.
- I've plain-formatted EUSA results from Cardiff (UK) for last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- Godfrey Sports (UK) have new products including long-sleeve retro t-shirts, two new styles of leggings and custom embroidered headbands. They've added three new all-in-one (unisuit) designs to their catalogue too, details of all online.
- Durham University (UK) are looking for a Boat Club Freshers' Manager. Their relatively byzantine university jobs list has the details: click "new candidate", then type 'freshers' into the job title and hit search, then tick the box for the job and finally "view job details" to get the full information. Closing date 10th August 2005.
- FISA have confirmed that TV coverage of the senior Worlds in Japan will be from the semifinals onwards, and that the film will be broadcast as live streaming to non-European viewers. (As regular readers will remember, there is a copyright/contract in operation until the end of this year which prevents the live streaming being shown to European computers yet, but the footage will be kept in archive and should be made available in some form to all internet users after the end of December 2005 when this arrangement expires). When FISA have final details of all the worldwide TV channels taking the footage, they will announce them on their website.
- Separately from that, Eurosport tells me they will be showing rowing at 08:00-09:30 BST (=GMT+1) on 1st-4th September inclusive, which will be highlights of the two semifinals and finals days, since Japan is so many hours ahead. I'll let you know if I'm told any changes on that.
Thursday 28th July 2005
Karon Phillips of New Wave UK is looking for someone going from Hammersmith/Putney (UK) to the world junior champs in Brandenburg next week, to help her shift a collection of 100 rigger jiggers across to Germany. She's offering a t-shirt at least to the person who helps, and you might get a spanner too if you ask nicely...
Wednesday 27th July 2005
- It is now possible to pre-order the 2005 senior World Champs DVD from FISA (PDF file).
- And FISA has put out the first world juniors press release - the official site is at www.jwm2005.org (in German and English). The promised entry lists were attached to the emailed version of FISA's press release: I can't find them on the FISA site so here they are - entries by event and entries by national federation (both PDF files). The rest (including provisional timetable) is largely available on the website or will be soon.
- Spark Electronics' website In2Rowing (neatly described as 'the center for bleeding edge rowing electronics' by its maker, rower Nathan Seidle, USA), has launched its new coxing amplifier with in-built GPS giving it all sorts of amusing new functions. It sets itself up as a combined amplifier and SpeedCoach for coxed boats. Go to the Catalog/Shop/and click on the rowing amplifier to see the detailed description.
Tuesday 26th July 2005
- Roger Slaymaker and Chris Bennett successfully broke the round-the-Isle-of-Wight rowing record (UK): full story and pictures here on the Southampton ARC website.
- Kent Mitchell and cronies are doing a KMRC blog from the World Masters Games (Edmonton, Canada), including results from the rowing races.
- The official WMG site also has results but it can be complex to successfully load.
- As requested by a couple of readers, I've now been given the GB team for the Coupe. I'm afraid I don't have which schools/clubs they come from.
- Niall Darroch has pictures from the Home International Regatta and EUSA, mostly of Scottish crews, but some others too.
- Details of the ARA courses being held in the Thames region in August (UK).
- Stuff about the ARA thanking volunteers (UK).
Monday 25th July 2005
- The Tideway Slug has pictures from Cardiff (Home International and EUSA Regatta) this weekend.
Sunday 24th July 2005
- Results of the Home International Regatta 2005 in Cardiff yesterday (Wales). No, I don't have times.
- Australian photographer James Worrell is also at the World Under-23's, and promises that in about a week's time he will be uploading the images he has to his commercial site where they can be purchased.
- For those looking ahead in Britain - if you're interested in working as a volunteer at the 2012 Olympics you might want to register your interest now. I hear a quarter of the many thousands needed are already signed up. The official website has a separate volunteer registration section - this is partly linked to encouraging those interested to volunteer for local groups now, but you don't have to: at the moment you're just expressing interest and to receive more information. Signing up now will make it more likely you're accepted on in 7 years time, whether for the rowing, general Olympic complex or something behind the scenes. The form also has a link for those who are not resident in the UK. On the Lottery front, as I suspected the new Olympic game will just be on scratchcards, so as not to deplete the main live draws too much.
Saturday 23rd July 2005
- No sign of results from EUSA in Cardiff (UK), but the Welsh ARA website has a pretty picture on its front page of what I presume is the course.
- Mentioned by DG on the rec.sport.rowing global newsgroup, the Perti Karpinnen Shrine. Mad stuff - put your sunglasses on before looking at it.
Friday 22nd July 2005
- Let's get a few things clear about the UK noticeboard. Yes, I do know it's targeted by scammers - it has been for the last three years. I can't stop them reading your postings and writing to you with ridiculous offers for the equipment you're selling. I don't think enough users of the board are nowadays reading my anti-virus, anti-spam and anti-scam advice which suggests how to spot and avoid such criminals. I'm not going to keep putting more examples online, but please do take steps yourself to minimise your exposure to the problem.
- Renowned rowing photographer Peter Spurrier, with the help of internerds NLRoei, is now beta-testing a new gallery site which will later have online ordering functions. For now you can see his U23 worlds pictures uploaded nightly on http://spurrier.nlroei.nl/ before the commercial mechanism and e-postcard function go live.
- A updated Excel chart of the Cambridge Town Bumps (UK) is online.
- FISA's latest circular includes plenty of interest. There are Gifu racing contingency scenarios in case the World Championships in Japan are hit by a typhoon, an explanation of the recent championship bid allocations for 2008-9, and the IOC's Medical Commission's report on non-traumatic sudden death in sport (particularly cardiovascular incidents and how to spot athletes at risk). All PDF files.
- BBC Radio 4 (UK) is doing a piece on the 1980 Olympic boycott this Sunday at 11:15am BST (GMT+1), including an interview with Olympic men's eights cox Lord Colin Moynihan.
Thursday 21st July 2005
- Regular readers will be aware that on Monday I relayed information I'd been given that Regatta Magazine (UK) was to be transferred to a company which produces a similar sailing magazine, to start in the autumn or New Year. Editor Sophie Mackley has now confirmed that my statement was mostly correct, except that it is the print and production which will be taken over by the new company - which presumably means the editing and content will stay in-house.
- FISA's website, www.worldrowing.com, has had intermittent very brief failures recently. If you're trying to track the Under-23's results via it, don't panic if pages disappear for a while, just wait a minute then try again - it mostly works fine then.
- Results from the US National Championships in Indianapolis this week (USA).
- A notice about dredging at Kew (London, UK) in early August.
- Leander's got some boats for sale (UK). Which have probably spent most of their lives tucked up in a nice snug pink boat-bay: not a bad provenance.
- Full Under-23 World Championships information here on the official website (in Dutch and English).
- I've been getting some fairly large attachment-ridden emails purporting to be "from RowingService administration" about "changing passwords for the account" and encouraging a reply to an invented address. This is utter b*ll***s - if you get anything of this nature just delete it. I'm not sure if it's viral or just irritating mailbox-clogging at the moment, but either way it's a fake. Anyone who receives something they think might be from me/the Rowing Service but isn't sure, can always check by writing to my Oxford email address (the one I usually reply from anyway) which is obtainable via the Oxford University website.
Wednesday 20th July 2005
- Another accident in Germany: at 5 o'clock a German trucker drove into the Hungarian Under-23 boat-trailer between Frankfurt am Main and Cologne. All nine boats are damaged, apparently beyond repair, and the trucker is said to be critically injured. There's a link on NLRoei with the news (in Dutch). Update - all the Hungarian crews have now been found boats to row in sourced around Amsterdam.
- The draft schedule for the EUSA 2005 Regatta (Cardiff, UK) is here in Word format. The gap on Saturday morning is where the Home International races will be held.
- From FISA, Competing below sea-level about the Maccabiah Games (Lake Galilee, Israel).
- A link for the Wichita Rowing Association (USA).
- The summer/autumn 2005 Rock The Boat (UK) brochure is now out. If you want a copy and aren't already on the mailing list, send your postal address to brochures@rock-the-boat.co.uk.
Tuesday 19th July 2005
- Tragic news from Germany: I heard from many sources this morning that Amy Safe, former Australian oarswoman, died tragically while training with an Australian cycling squad. I gather she was JW2- (1993) and JW1x (1994) champion, in the AUS Olympic W8+ in 1996, World Cup W4- and W8+ silver medals Hazewinkel 1998, and W8+ 1999, missed the Sydney team and changed to cycling, and married Simon Gillett (LM4- double world champion), her former head coach. Links to more details and official statements on ABC Australia. Messages of sympathy to her family and friends can be sent via this email address from the Cycling Australia website. Five other members of the CA team were injured in the same accident, and three are in a critical condition. Thanks everyone who wrote in to me this morning.
- The draw for Bewdley Regatta (UK) can be downloaded as a PDF file.
- The 291st Doggetts' Coat & Badge apprentices' sculling race is on this Friday at 11am from London Bridge to Cadogan Pier, Chelsea. The three entries are:- a) Mark Macpherson (Poplar Blackwall & District RC, employed by Woods River Services), betting odds 11-10, new entry, apprenticed to his father Mark who won in 1978; b) Jack Dean (Medway RC, employer Alan C Bennett & Sons), betting 6-4, third last year; and c) Lance Veysi (Poplar B&D RC, employer Sean Collins), betting 4-1, apprenticed to his uncle, a winner in 1967.
- The poster for Bradford Autumn Regatta (a primary event, UK) is on the Bradford website. OARA for it goes live after the August bank holiday.
- UK notice: "A stampfli single scull black carbon wing rigger was removed from the grass banking during National championships. Could the person who accidently picked it up please contact Jim on 07801350830 to arrange its safe return."
- An interesting bit of Olympic history - No one's celebrating this silver anniversary (WFAA, USA).
Monday 18th July 2005
- This one's too amusing to miss - god of the day. I've stuck the banner on its own page because New Info is a bit crowded anyway, but couldn't wait until tomorrow because the Monday 18th July god is "Da-Yu", ancient Chinese god of Flood Control. Very apt for rowers. It's a hoot - with chirpy commentary, a god shop (heaven only knows what they sell there?), 'top gods' (should get some arguments going) and under the inimitable 'offerings' section, the question 'have you seen a tree which could be a god in disguise?' Lovely stuff. Thanks MSJ.
- The ARA is asking for comments from its membership on safety matters following the Farooq inquest verdict (UK). There's also a bit on their website about UK Year of the Volunteer, and the Coupe image-link on the front page is very cute.
- Nat Champs results - the full printable set on the NWSC results page, or separated by day on the official website. As mentioned in my live online commentary, I have a directory of photofinish pictures from the tower at Nottingham.
- The draw for Staines Regatta (UK) is online.
- An early heads-up about the Rowers' Revenge Triathlon (Sunday 2nd October, UK), details of which are now online. Newcomers note that it tends to be oversubscribed very early indeed.
- Godfrey Sports (UK) have now launched their individual club website, where clubs can custom tailor a set of kit for members to order.
- Henley on Todd (Australia) is at it again - the alternative rowing regatta...
- DVDs of Durham Regatta (UK) are being offered by the organisers. A nice touch.
- Details of Stourport Regatta (13th-14th August, UK).
- Information on training courses being held at Dorney this summer (UK, MS Word document).
Sunday 17th July 2005
- A reminder that I'm doing live online commentary for the senior finals at the UK National Championships today.
Friday 15th July 2005
- FISA are re-opening bidding for one of the Rowing World Cups in 2007 and one in 2008 - presumably in 2007 Munich, who are hosting the Worlds, will not also host a World Cup, since they scarcely need to as a test event. (Anyone for Eton?!). The 2008 Junior & Non-Olympic Worlds will be in Ottensheim, Austria, while of course the Olys are in Beijing. More on the bids on the FISA website.
- On links off the main FISA page there is also a pile of information recently put up - on the World Rowing Forum in Istanbul, the Under-23 championships starting next week, and recent news from around the rowing world.
- The Coupe de la Jeunesse, for juniors not going to the Junior Worlds, is being held on 30th-31st July at Dorney Lake, Eton (UK). Information on the link above, and the timetable has just been published. Spectators are just being charged £5 a car to include a free programme. There is more about the event on the Coupe official website.
- Law Rucks in the US - as well as the fuss over the international athlete acknowledgement form back in June, Greg Ruckman also on June 2nd filed for binding arbitration over the USRowing selection procedures for the LM4- as part of a campaign he's been running since September 2004 for open LM4- trials. Now it appears USRowing are pushing for expansion of his demand to all boat classes, which was not the original intention. See www.usrowingarbitration.com, Greg's website on the matter (USA), for the latest updates, including a rejection that only the LM4- should be affected by the American Arbitration Association's findings.
- Details and starting order for next week's Cambridge Town Bumps (UK), which although it doesn't say so anywhere on the website, begins on Tuesday 19th July.
- A JPG poster for the Steve Gunn seminar in September (UK).
- The GBR senior worlds team was announced yesterday, with a couple more crews to be decided on at a later date.
- Final confirmed results from the UK 2005 Veteran Championships are now online. The pictures of gold & silver winners taken on the presentation raft will be uploaded within the next couple of weeks - poor organiser is busy....
- The obligatory press release on Sir MP's Corporate Regatta (Word doc, UK).
- Cambridge Blue Patrick Moore has put some new Light Blue rowing slideshowsin his online collection. These include various HRR parties, and one of the CUBC winners of the Ladies' Plate. The slideshows are PC-only, as they're .exe format - save and play.
Wednesday 13th July 2005
- Tyne RC (UK) are hosting an Endurance Challenge on Saturday 13th August this year, at the club. There's nothing visible on their website so here goes: Ergo-Run-Ergo, in three divisions (Novice/Junior, Intermediate and "Tyneman"). The runs are to local landmarks and back and the distances as follows: N/J 2km-Stevensons-1km, Int 5km-Wylam-3km, Tyneman 10km-Ovingham-5km. Timing from first erg stroke to last erg stroke with no allowance made for breaks, changes etc. Relay team entries accepted for N/J and Int events, entry £10/person seniors, £5/person juniors and a free barbecue for competitors. Use ARA forms to enter, contact is Brendon Schley, 56 Middle Row, Ryton, NE40 3EQ. Enquiries to Chris.8woodbine@blueyonder.co.uk or Brendon.
- Row2k (USA) has a new MaxRigging! column with the latest offering "Seven questions to ask before you start that outboard motor". The first one, back in April, had an equally enticing title: "Top three ways coaches waste money".
- The USA has also announced its U23 team.
- A pile of World Cup-related coverage on FISA's website.
- RowPerfect UK is providing warm-up RowPerfects for crews at the Nat Champs this year (UK) and hosting a daily seminar at their machine tent on "How fast are you going?" by Coxmate owner/designer Peter Hodson on Friday (5pm), Saturday (12 noon and 5pm) and Sunday (12 noon).
- The ARA's started a section on London Youth Rowing (UK).
Tuesday 12th July 2005
- 7pm 23rd September 2005, Steve Gunn (GBR High Performance Coach for Hwt Men) will give a talk at the River Tees Watersports Centre in Stockton on how to adapt training principles and programmes to suit the club environment (UK). Contact Loretta Williams for more details or to book.

- Pictures from Sir Matt's Corporate Regatta (UK) on La Slug du Tideroute (ou peut-etre le lingot de lit de maree, according to Babelfish).
Monday 11th July 2005
- I'll be doing live online commentary, updated every 30 seconds, during the UK National Championships in Nottingham this coming weekend. Not for the whole thing, but for all senior finals on Sunday 17th July. Bookmark the link now.
- The second EUSA Regatta press release (Word doc). The event is being held on the weekend of 22nd-24th July in Cardiff (UK), with the Home International Regatta interspersed on 23rd July.
- UK London notice: - "Fixed wheel bike found in Thames (opposite UL). If you're missing such a bike please email Sue Appelboom with description/frame no."
- And another from the Tideway - "PLA Notice U8 advises that the side arches of Chiswick bridge will closed over the comming week to allow engineers access to inspect the underside. If there are 3 red lights or disks hung under the arch. No attempt should be made to pass through that arch. For those who want to venture down towards the City, there are strengthening works being undertaken to the railway bridge beside Battersea Power Station. In addition to arch closures there will be additional barges moored and tugs operating in the area. Finally a general reminder that, should you venture as far as the London Eye, there are two security exlusion zones. one outside the Houses of Parliament and one outside MI... at Vauxhall Bridge. In view of the current of security situation in London, the TRRC do not want to get a complaint that an oarsman has set off a major alert."
- Concept 2 UK are starting an English Indoor Rowing Championship event (Word doc) this year. As well as the press release they also sent me this delicious hairy knees picture to illustrate it. Anyone want to own up to owning the knees?
Saturday 9th July 2005
- The usual results/photos/news from Lucerne on FISA's website.
- An interesting programme - Row New York (USA), which combines teenagers' academic preparation for SATs and university entrance with rowing. As far as I can tell it's exclusively for girls, and aimed at the underprivileged.
- A link for Savannah Rowing Club (Georgia, USA).
- A website for Wudiboat Benelux.
Friday 8th July 2005
- Terrorism in London: I have not had any news yet of rowers injured by the blasts yesterday - but no doubt some of our community have friends who have been affected. Sympathy to all, and well done the London emergency services for reacting so efficiently.
- Very good news for rowing - the IOC has confirmed rowing as an Olympic sport up until 2012. Of the 28 summer sports baseball and softball missed out, and will be excluded in 2012. The proposed alternatives (rollersports, squash, golf, karate and rugby) need both an IOC Executive approval and 2/3 majority vote from the IOC delegates in order to be included for London. None of this affects Beijing 2008, which is already set at the current 28 summer sports. Matt Smith's comment on the news was "FISA is pleased that the noble sport of rowing has been confirmed by the IOC and we look forward to a wonderful Olympic regatta in Eton in July 2012."
- And some disturbingly bad news - The Long Bridges Boathouse fire (see previous days, UK) has been claimed by the Animal Liberation Front. I don't know if this claim is true or not, but I can confirm that they have certain details (about what was done to the padlocks) absolutely spot on. While not private, this information has not been greatly publicised, so it suggests they know something of the situation. Thanks CH for the link.
- I've been sent a pile of London2012 joke-pix, most of which are good enough to put online in an RS directory. Hopefully this will stop me being sent them fifteen times more over the next week.....
- Within an hour of putting it up, Bunny Guinness's request for a wooden boat has been sorted, so I've removed the reference.
- A new site, Pro-Athlete (UK), started by Olympians Luka Grubor, Steve Trapmore, Richard Wearne and a few of their friends, offering free coaching/coxing advice amongst other things. Adorned with amusingly cheesy pictures of various rowing stars: the free advice is balanced out by a store with plenty of commercial rowing and sport products for sale.
- From the North-East Rowing mailing list (UK), a very useful tide tables website.
- An update on Sir Matthew Pinsent's corporate regatta, to be held on Sunday 10th July at Dorney Lake (UK). More than 30 crews have entered, and some 180-odd people have tried the sport out. He also tells me his testimonial year is going well - most of the events are happening outside the UK because they did not want to bleed the UK rowing community. The target audience is mostly the non-UK business community.
- The Farooq inquest report which I mentioned yesterday has been converted into a plethora of formats for easier viewing. You can download it as a PNG (217KB) from Ewoud Dronkert, as a Word file without the picture (36KB) converted by Peter Quarrell or as a JPG (260KB) with the picture converted by RQ. Please note it's copyright the Reading Evening Post and I only have it online because it's been accidentally omitted from their website.
Thursday 7th July 2005
- More on the Long Bridges Boathouse fire in Oxford (UK).
- Australia now has a new rowing magazine - Rowing MagOZine.
- The Rowing Forum is a good way of reading the Usenet group rec.sport.rowing in a web-based fashion. Sometimes takes a while for the posts to show, but otherwise it is RSR unvarnished.
- The lengthy and informative article about the Sikander Farooq inquest verdict, in last week's Reading Evening Post (UK), has not yet appeared online. It did come out in print, so this is probably an accidental oversight - recent end-June to 3rd-July REP articles aren't visibly on the website, so it's not just that one. I've been sent the article as a scan, and think it's reasonable to publish it under these circumstances. It's a bitmap file, 1.7MB, so only take a look if you've got space/time. I'll convert later today - bit busy right now. FYI in checking for a short piece in the Telegraph which then got cut even more, I confirmed that as of Tuesday the ARA had not yet received the coroner's letter. Stuart Ward, ARA Hon Water Safety Adviser, said to me: "We'll look at it and then do something about it. There's no doubt whatever criticism the coroner has will go out there. It could be a matter of days before we release information. We're not blase and we do take on board things people suggest." Now you've heard it.
Wednesday 6th July 2005
- WOW! London gets the Olympics!. Brilliant news (sorry - can't help but be partisan). More on BBC News and presumably every other news outlet.
- Shocking stuff - another Oxford boathouse fire (from BBC).
- Important UK notice: due to an unavoidable problem with the National Rowing Championships host, the usual official website will be down for up to 10 hours on 7th July, which is when the provisional draw is due to be posted. The draw will be put on a temporary page here until their own website is back in action. The Nat Champs committee apologise for the disruption, which they can do nothing about.
Tuesday 5th July 2005
- Urgent UK message - "Lost/borrowed/pinched from HRR boat tent between 7.00pm Sunday 3rd and 7.00am Monday 4th ... One stroke side New style Croker oar [375 m2]wooden laminate handle, spoon painted White. Was with 3 others underneath a Vespoli boat. If found please contact CD Riches".
- A final reminder from Welsh Intl team manager Phil Rees (email now corrected) that senior men must register on the WARA website before this weekend, to ensure they have the right contact details. Even those who have attended trial events, been contacted earlier this season, or rowed for Wales before must re-register please. Any problems contact Phil directly, otherwise use the site.
- Irishrowing.com (Ireland) recently ran a competition to design t-shirts with words that best summed up the sport of rowing. The winners were "Blisters" and "Rigger Mortis", and the t-shirts can be ordered online via the site.
- A PDF poster for Staines Amateur Regatta (23rd July, UK).
- And another PDF poster, this time for Warrington Regatta (30th July, UK).
- Lots of Henley Royal pictures from Sybrand Treffers of NLRoei.
- Request for historical help: does anyone know about "the Jordan Rowing Club in London, England"? A correspondent, David Salter, has a silver cup that his father, H. Salter, won there in 1922 as Sculling Champion. If anyone has information please email the RS editor who will pass the information on.
Monday 4th July 2005
- Back to normal. For anyone wanting HRR results/pictures and eventually video, it's all on the official website.
- Dr. Charlie Simpson, a lecturer in exercise physiology and coaching science at Reading University (UK), is doing a talk on coaching behaviour, the value of long-distance training and the effects of fluid balance on rowing performance. This Wednesday (6th July), 8pm at Reading Rowing Club. If you want a pretty poster to print out for your club, there's a fairly large filesize Powerpoint poster here.
- Sorry - it's ended now, but an interesting German eBay auction of a BBG racing single, with the winner invited to the Junior Worlds in Brandenburg to collect it. Good way to support a regatta, methinks.
- FISA's website has information up now about the Lucerne World Cup coming up this weekend - entry lists etc.
- The Skiff Club (UK) has moved its website to www.theskiffclub.org.uk. Changey ze linkys pliz.
- The next Tideway Scullers' summer sculling course (UK) will run from 22nd-26th August, led as usual by Alec Hodges. Rowers/scullers of all abilities and any clubs welcome. Five days, cost £100, numbers limited. To book, contact Alec Hodges on 020 8994 3502.
- Schedule of events and other information from Maidenhead Regatta (6th August, UK) on the Maidenhead RC website.
- Regatta poster and entry form for the Parrs Priory Novice Regatta (13th August, UK) are on the club's website.
Sunday 3rd July 2005
- Apologies - things got a little busier than I hoped. A round-up of press links from Henley and elsewhere now on the press page.
