- Message for sweep rowers at HRR this year (UK) - "As in previous years, and with the kind permission of the Stewards of HRR, Jesus College Boat Club (Cambridge) will be running the annual Spare Pairs race on the Tuesday preceding Henley Royal Regatta (27th June 2006). This competition, run from the Barrier to the Finish, is open to any registered spare pairs who are accompanying their respective clubs. In past competitions, these have been from British schools, American universities and so on - there is no eligibility requirement, other than that of being a spare pair. This is a great opportunity for spares to race on the course, and to compete for the Jesus College Spare Pairs Trophy. This will be available for photographs after the final, and individual shields will be presented by the JCBC to the winners. In an effort to encourage a greater number of entries, JCBC are asking for any interested clubs to email the JCBC President, Stephen Benjamin, at jcbc-president*at*jesus*dot*cam*dot*ac*dot*uk (removing the anti-spam bits!) with their entry. This does not need to include names of competitors yet - these details can be collected in Henley. Entries
will close at 12p.m. on Monday 26th June 2006, and the draw will be announced soon thereafter. Notices will be published via email and on the information boards by the control desks at the Regatta. Given that the races are run during normal training hours on the Henley Reach, the number of entries may be limited. We look forward to receiving your entries and hope to see as many pairs racing as possible! Stephen Benjamin JCBC President 2005-06". Editor's note - they don't say this is limited to men, so I suggest the Remenham women's spare pairs get cracking, particularly perhaps Princeton and Hollandia, and give the lads a run for their money. RQ
- World Cup news - Rowing partners now world rivals (Stuff, NZ).
Wednesday 14th June 2006
- The full Henley Royal entry list is up online (UK).
- From Martin Cross in the Guardian, Campbell on course for key contest with Kiwi (UK). Nice work Mart - are you going to write about anyone else this week? Don't hold your breath for space in the UK papers on the World Cup (regatta), readers - it's rather unlikely.... Complain to the sports editor of your favourite paper now rather than waiting until after the weekend - tell them you want to hear about something other than footie.
- An apology from Star Club (UK).
Tuesday 13th June 2006

He has decided to order an independent inquiry into rowing safety and its administration, under the National Water Safety Forum. More details on the link, but this could have quite a huge impact both within the UK and outside.
- The local Henley Standard (UK) has a picture of the rather fabulous-looking Prince Albert Challenge Cup (see 9th June remarks) about to be handed over to Henley Royal Chairman Mike Sweeney in the presence of the Queen. The piece confirms that it is Queen Victoria's Prince Albert, the first patron of the regatta, and not Prince Albert of Monaco, after whom the trophy is named. You can see the actual trophy if you visit HRR headquarters, and it will be on display throughout the regatta in the trophy tent.
- The draw for Marlow Regatta (17th June, UK) is now up. Competitor instructions and safety plan on the same link.

- The Rowing Service is considering doing its usual online commentary for the Nat Champs (UK) this year and is after volunteers, preferably those not doing very much in the way of racing, to come up the tower and help spot, check results/crews, take rates and gaze through binoculars. Any offers? See here for last year's commentary and email rq [at] rowingservice.com if interested. Commitment would just be on the Sunday, for the duration of the senior finals.
- The new Prince Albert Challenge Cup for the Men's Student Coxed Fours was presented to Henley Royal Regatta (UK) by Imperial College in the presence of HM the Queen earlier this week, on Wednesday 7th June. No visible photos/press releases about the occasion yet, and the HRR trophies page hasn't yet been updated to let us take a peek at what it looks like.
- The draw and order of racing for Marlow Town Regatta (UK, this weekend) are now out.
- Entries for Marlow Regatta the following weekend (UK again) close at 8pm this coming Saturday with the draw being made at 10am on Sunday. It will be posted here when done.
- Announcing the Blades Retail Cafe, an Oarsport (UK) operation offering cafe food and drink, wireless internet, a clothing/equipment shop and rowing/news TV/video just a few minutes drive/cycle from Holme Pierrepont. Brands stocked at the moment include Crew Clothing, Helly Hansen and Rudy Project amongst others. Very good bus access to the HP lake or Nottingham centre, and a function room which can be hired out. Open seven days a week and very suitable for visitors to the Loughborough/National Veteran regatta this weekend. On 20th June the venue is hosting a short rigging seminar by Terry O'Neill as part of the East Midlands regional service to clubs.

- The Notts County RA 25th Anniversary Dinner (UK) will take place on Saturday 26th November 2006, at the Long Room, Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, Nottingham. Wednesday 7th June 2006
- Late update: - FISA announce that the 2006 recipient of the Thomas Keller Medal will be Agostino Abbagnale, younger brother of two former winners and a triple Olympic champion. The full press release on FISA (PDF format). Some may remember Agostino's name coming up in connection with allegations from an Italian newspaper that he along with four other athletes at the Sydney Games in 2000 had unusually high human growth hormone (HGH) levels in a drugs test (an out of competition one, I believe). At the time IRN did an exclusive interview with the Italian Rowing Federation's Dr. Giusseppe la Mura which makes some telling points in defence of it being a freak result rather than a true positive. I can't find anything on the IOC or FISA websites about the athletes' names being cleared, but there was certainly no action taken. I mention the incident because others are bound to remember and nag me for not saying anything, but obviously Agostino was completely cleared of wrongdoing. There was talk at the time of the newspaper concerned having jumped the gun in announcing results before they were confirmed positive.
- FISA have decided to support New Zealand's bid for the 2010 World Championships on Lake Karapiro. The Netherlands are retracting their bid so that the only country left in the running for that year is NZ. NED will bid again for the 2013 worlds. Full report in Dutch from NLRoei (use Babelfish for rough translations).
- No sign yet of the Hexham regatta results (UK) but they should be on this page when ready. I hope Hexham have the sense to keep (and keep online) their 2005 results - the way the page is named doesn't make me entirely optimistic. Thank you for listening to this broadcast on behalf of the 'Don't Chuck Away Old Online Results Campaign'.
- A website for the Ann Arbor Rowing Club (Michigan, USA).
- The Durham Regatta draw is up (UK).
- A discussion on NUIG Galway's suspension on the Irish Rowing MSN group (Ireland). Be careful to read in chronological order as the thread got a bit abusive later.

- The 2006 World Championships in Eton (UK) is running an enlarged adopt-a-nation school/youth project. Not restricted to educational groups, any bunch of young people (Scout/Brownie/Cadet/Guide troupes? junior rowing club squads? youth clubs?) can take part. Details all on the linked page.
- The Worlds is also running another scheme to get non-rowers involved - 'Row your way to the World Championships' with Olympic champion Tim Foster. Aimed at non-rowing sports clubs, especially gyms, it's offering free t-shirts and a chance to win tickets to the racing to non-rowers who cover 50km in a month on an ergometer.

- National federations are reminded that entries for this year's World Under-23 Championship must be in to Daniela Oronova of FISA by 20th June 2006.
- King's College London BC alumni club Juniper (UK) has a new website. It includes the London Hospital Bumps charts with some pointed yet somehow endearing comments about their rivals and the racing action. - Results for Walton & Weybridge Regatta (UK, formerly known as Walton Amateur) are now up.
- Those wishing to enter Egham Regatta (UK) have until midday on Sunday 11th June, which is two weeks before the regatta rather than the usual one. - A link to the Talkin Tarn Regatta (UK), which is using OARA for the first time.
Friday 2nd June 2006
- A very intriguing idea from BioRower (Austria), who make land rowing machines on the old style (two handles pulling in a similar way to sculling) but with a few modern twists, such as electronic data-gathering about your stroke arc, force (on either handle) etc. which allows comparison between athletes. I wonder how much of their engineering is new and how much copied from other sources? Not clear from the photos. They offer S1s (1x) at the moment but are planning R2 (2-) in the autumn and offer bigger sweep and sculling 'boats' on demand. They also say the machines can be dismantled to schlep about in a car, and the price for the S1 currently on their site is ?11,490 excluding tax. For anyone having trouble with their front page, which is temperamental, try the direct English and German pagelinks.
Thursday 1st June 2006

- Rowing crime - apparently both Birmingham and Exeter RCs had their trailer tyres slashed while at Monmouth last weekend (UK). And Exeter's minibus was done too.
- "A plea for help from Marlow Regatta (UK). Following the huge success of last year's regatta the committee are trying to drum up additional volunteers to help run the 2006 event. Anyone who feels they could give some time (morning, afernoon or early evening) to help with marshalling and timekeeping are asked to contact the regatta at volunteer@themarlowregatta.com. Competitors are reminded that entries close at 20:00 on Saturday 10th."
June.?
