- OAR Northwest (USA) is one of the crews doing the Atlantic Ocean Fours west-east race in June. The route is that of the original ocean rowers George Harbo and Frank Samuelsen. They're going to be filmed by Flying Spot Entertainment and the footage used to make a documentary. More about the race itself, another Woodvale Events operation, and also ocean rowing in general on the ORS website.
- Entries are now open for the SilverSkiff 2006 in Turin (Italy) - all details on the website. You have a while to get the entries in though: the deadline is not until midnight on Saturday 4th November. Entries cost 20 euros per adult and 5 euros per child (KinderSkiff) and can be paid by cheque, or at the time of arrival/registration.
- It's unclear what's going to happen about NUI Galway (Ireland) at Henley Royal (see below) - the rules require their entry to be countersigned by their national federation, which may not be possible if they're under a ban.
Tuesday 30th May 2006
- Loads more UK notices.
- Worrying (but not the first time it has happened) - Girl rowers are attacked (Burton Mail, UK).

- A message from the Vet Champs (UK): "Entries for the Vet Champs close
this coming Saturday, 3/6/06. Postal entries must arrive on or before that date and OARA entries must be completed before 09:00."
- And a plea from Mercantile RC (Australia): "Mercantile Rowing Club, one of the most successful and friendly clubs in Australia, is sending a Mens 4x to HRR this year. It is looking forward to training on the Tideway, competing at Marlow regatta and HRR. It is seeking accommodation for athletes and support crew in London (5 people, 12-23 June) and Henley (7 people, 23 June - 2 July). If anyone is able to assist, please contact Henry Edgar directly and urgently! Many thanks."

- The Schwarzenbach rowing gallery at the River and Rowing Museum (UK) is now open again following a major revamp. The formal launch later in June. Again, a reminder that anyone buying tickets this summer will find them valid for a full 12 months for revisits.
- Oh it's all been happening in Munich. Following an intense discussion, FISA members vote to re-introduce European Rowing Championships (from FISA). Post-worlds, first year to be 2007 at the end of September. However, the creation of a separate European Rowing Federation, which was being bruited about, failed at the vote, and FISA will take charge of the ERCs when they begin. Bids are requested for the 2007 and 2008 ERCs, and decisions made at an extra meeting of the European rowing federations/NGBs to take place at this year's World Championships in Eton. For the inside story see a full report from Chris Dodd for the Rowing Service.
- Met Regatta (UK) details are out: Saturday draw and timetable and Sunday draw and timetable now up. See the main site for other information.
- The timetable for Walton & Weybridge Regatta (formerly Walton Amateur, UK) is also out now.
- From NERN (UK) - "Due to unforeseen circumstances the number of Northern Umpires available for Hexham Regatta is quite restricted. Could any umpires who have not communicated their availablity to the North Region Umpires commission, but are available for Saturday 3rd June 2006 at Hexham please contact Bob Manning direct on 01434 603206 or _Woof4Woody[@]aol.com_."
- Strokeshot (UK) is a new enterprise from a couple of OU students offering Oxford bumps pictures only by digital delivery for much less cost. An unusually nice variety of images.
- Imperial College's summer rowing courses are on again (UK) with coaches including Simon Cox, Bill Mason, Tim Foster, Steve Trapmore, Keith Morgan. There will be at least one Olympic champion (either Steve T or Tim F) there on one day for each course. The last two are not age-restricted.
Saturday 27th May 2006
- All done and dusted at the World Cup and it's Germany 77 points so runaway World Cup leaders. Plenty of material on the FISA website.
- Noticed in Doddy's piece - "National University of Ireland Galway have been suspended for 15 months by the Irish Amateur Rowing Union for status infringements. They are ineligible for Henley, where they hold the Visitors' Challenge Cup". Wow.
- From Monmouth Regatta (UK) this morning: "Current Regatta Status: Running (All Events) (Monmouth Regatta: Running (Confirmed at 08:30 am Friday.))
Following heavy rain over the past couple of days, water levels on the
River Wye have raised quite high levels. The current status of the
regatta is given above. Full details of the Regatta and any changes that are made will be given on the Club Website www.herefordrc.co.uk. We have every intention of running our regatta. However, if the river is above 3ft, we will be unable to run novice or
junior events. This is due to safety reasons and cannot be avoided. Our plan of action is as follows:
a) The regatta committee will meet on Sunday Morning. A decision about
the Regatta will be made then.
b) By 10.00am on Sunday, a list of any events that had to be cancelled
(if any) will be posted on the website.
Unfortunately, due to the unpredictability of the River Wye, we will not
be able to make a decision earlier."
Friday 26th May 2006
- Munich World Cup regatta links as yesterday. It's bucketing down rain over here, but at least the wind has dropped since yesterday.
- Pictures of the World Cup from NLRoei (Netherlands) including the swimming Aussies in the W2- repechage yesterday. (The Dutch and their obsession with swimming...)
- The National Schools Regatta (Nottingham, UK) starts today.
- A small website for the Passaic River Rowing Association 10 miles from New York (USA). Their front page and news alert me to what they describe as 'National Learn to Row Day' - does anyone know if this is spread across the whole USA or just in some places?
- A new batch of UK notices catching up - loads more later today to clear the backlog.
- Kiwi Rowing Skiffs (KIRS) (NZ) is selling the 2005 NZ fleet after the Eton World Championships. A PDF with the details is downloadable from here.
Thursday 25th May 2006
- World Cup regatta number one starts today: FISA are running news, the results tracker and eventually image galleries from Munich today to Saturday. Local information, course details and German/international coverage available in German and English from the Olympia Regattaverein Munchen website, which also has details of the recent Munich Juniors regatta. Since the lifting of restrictions in the New Year everyone can access these now.

- A little initiative called London Youth Rowing is an offshoot of the London Youth organisation, working with Royal Docks RC. News about this summer's rowing courses for 11-18 year olds should be up by the end of today on their main LYR website (first link). Cost only £25 if unaffiliated to LYR, less if the club is already affiliated, with kayaking, sailing and raft building included in the week.
- One I missed - Calgary Rowing Club in Canada, with information on their latest rowing tours, summer camps and learn-to-row programmes.
- From FISA, a full time coach required for the Iranian Rowing Federation (Iran, PDF format).
- Sad news - Rowing's Tom Flood passes away (Radio New Zealand, NZ). Also Capelluto remembered for passion, zeal (Yale Daily News, USA, about a former rower).
Wednesday 24th May 2006
- Henley Women's Regatta (UK) closes its entry lists at 2pm on Tuesday 30th May. Changes this year: entries may ONLY be made online via the regatta's website (not OARA etc) and points are as from 31st March 2006. - Full list of entrants/teams for the World Cup Regatta starting tomorrow, from FISA.
- The draw for Monmouth Regatta (UK) - Saturday 750m and Sunday 1500m is available in PDF format. Seems slightly brutal to have the longer race on the second day, but apparently it's because they've taken over Worcester's sprint slot on the Saturday.
- Draw and schedules (Sunday and Monday) are up for Northwich Regatta (UK, PDFs).
- Results from Chester Regatta (UK, PDF format) are online.
Tuesday 23rd May 2006

- Photos from Durham City Regatta (UK) are on the BBC Wear website.
Friday 19th May 2006
- A new idea has been launched at this year's Henley Royal Regatta (UK): 'Regatta Radio', 106.0 FM. Although an independent enterprise run by industry professionals it has the backing of the Regatta Stewards and is intended to enhance the regatta. Regatta Radio will be broadcasting 24-7 from 21st June to 2nd July inclusive, and will include rowing, travel and local news, features and music. Companies wishing to advertise please contact them via the website or email, and they are likely to help later local regattas out by announcing details if you ask nicely. A nice feature is that since the station will only be available in a roughly 8-mile radius region, they intend to broadcast live online as well, accessible from anywhere in the world.
- The annual women's rowing lecture at the River and Rowing Museum (UK) is this year Katherine Grainger on 'the rise and rise of women's rowing in Britain', on Tuesday 13th June at 7:30pm. Details on the linked page, from which a booking form can be downloaded, or call 01491-415605.

Thursday 18th May 2006
- Emanuel School (UK) have a job for a boathouse manager (PDF format). No closing date given - apply 'as soon as possible'.
- Creativity in Sport (UK), run by former GB lightweight rower Ben Webb's mum Liz (of GMTV fame) is launching the Creative Rowing Champions initiative, a competition for primary and secondary schools to celebrate the World Champs at Eton. Mascot 'Joggy Bear' (ah, sweet). Launch is at noon on Friday 19th May at the River and Rowing Museum in Henley, details on the linked PDF file.
- PDF heaven today. The next few are from FISA, with the anti-doping survey results, and the latest FISA circular. This includes who tested positive - one from Bulgaria in an international out-of-competition test, and more from Egypt (1), Italy (1), Portugal (2) and China (1) in national testing. All received some sort of ban. The other bit of FISA news is an experimental new progression system for events with 25+ entries, which FISA will be testing at the three World Cup regattas. Essentially it uses times and positions in the first heats to move crews to quarterfinals and semis, before reaching finals as usual. Events with 24 or fewer entries will progress as normal. Presumably if it works then FISA will be proposing its adoption at the World Championships as well.
- Results (PDF format) and picture gallery from the 'Sveti Duje' regatta in Split (Croatia) two weekends ago.

According to the recent press release, "highlights will include a colourful boat pageant, performances by local dance troupes and a parade of national flags". Plus speeches, of course - standard o.c. fare. However - "The ceremony will conclude with a firework display at 9:00pm. Entry is free to everyone".
- Yesterday FISA's own website, World Rowing, had a major redesign. More or less the same info in more or less the same categories, nothing big appears to be missing, with the design rejigged and snazzed up. Still similar loading times, but you can't have everything and it is illustrated with good-quality pix. Particularly helpful to have the biography site (www.rowingone.com) linked off the main site now.
- Jamco Times are again covering the PAC-10's live (USA) on Sunday. On air from 7:45am to 9:45am for the preliminaries, 1:45pm to 4:15pm for the finals. Live audio on the site is a direct feed from the regatta's PA system/announcers, and there will be a camera tracking the last 500m of the course. Requires Windows Media Player. Thursday 11th May 2006
- Here's one which will keep the mechanically-minded quiet for a while. Ever-fascinated by the weird and easily illustrated, IOL (Independent Newspapers Online) in South Africa has published a recently-taken-out patent from a certain Gil Sung Lee of Korea, for a rowing bicycle. The article is here and I have captured a screenshot in case it disappears, as IOL articles tend to do. More usefully there is a link to a PDF of the full patent on PatentData, again I've kept a copy just in case it vanishes. I'm not even convinced it would work very well, let alone that it does not clash with existing patents and inventions/prior art. I'll leave the experts to decide.
- At Henley Royal Regatta this year (UK) a reunion will be held for the volunteer officials at the 1986 Worlds in Nottingham. See Workers of the Worlds Reunite press release (UK).

- From Pac-10 (USA), Schedule set for Sunday's Pac-10 Rowing Championships.
- Another club safety audit reminder from the ARA (UK).
- OARA is open for entries for Marlow Town Regatta (10th June, UK). This is the event still on the Thames at Marlow, not the multilane version at Dorney a couple of weeks later.
- An FAQ for the Thames Water hosepipe ban (UK) which those washing boats etc. may be interested in.
Wednesday 10th May 2006
- A series of unusual requests today, starting with the oddest. From a producer of VH1's 'Celebrity Fit Club' in the USA: "One of our contestants this year is Ted Lange, best known for playing Isaac on The Love Boat. He's doing a play in Denver at the moment and would like to take a rowing class for the CFC show. Can anyone suggest an instructor located in Denver?" (Note that this may be water or indoor rowing, unclear. Send suggestions to RQ who will forward them.

- Results from Birmingham Regatta (UK, Excel format) now available.
- Lost blades at Notts City (UK)? Warrington RC think they may have left two pairs of sculling blades (white, blue and yellow spoons) behind at Notts City. Cleavers, with "LW4x+" written on the looms. Could have been left Sunday evening, as they only rowed that day. Anyone seen them? Contact Martin Goswell if so - the club is going to the inter-regionals this weekend.
- Further note re: Putney Town Regatta (UK, see yesterday). "They will also have a launch moored up near Harrods' Depository in line with the navigation buoys, to aact as a start marshal. It will not be in the navigation lane and should not impinge too much on the inshore zone, but they ask that river users look out for it."
- Bernie Horton passes (Row2k, USA).
Tuesday 9th May 2006
- B*ggrit, forgot to put up the links to Saturday and Sunday final results from Gent International Regatta (Belgium, PDF format). Old results and heats/semis from last weekend linked from the results archive page. The ever-so efficient organisers have already put up some details of the 2007 regatta.
- The provisional draw for the Junior InterRegional Championships (UK, Excel format).
- The draw for Poplar Regatta (UK) is online as a Word and PDF file.
- The 10th anniversary North-Eastern Boat Race (UK) was held yesterday - results on the Newcastle University BC site and a report on the Durham University BC site. A documentary about this year's race will be shown on ITV on 15th May: unfortunately from the look of the listings it's probably going to be in the region only, not nationwide.
- An apology from Putney Town Regatta (UK, 13th May) - "The regatta committee would like to apologise to local clubs for the inevitable disruption to their activities which will be caused by the regatta this year. We are running under a number of new constraints, one of which is the way in which we are being asked to marshal our competitors on the flood tide. The congestion that this will cause on Putney Hard is something we are aware of and trying very hard to deal with. Please bear with us, we will be using extra marshals at low tide to keep things flowing but pinch points may occur. We are only human."
Monday 8th May 2006
- As announced formally yesterday, Jürgen Grobler has been awarded an honorary OBE in recognition of his services to British rowing. Sunday Times feature writer Andrew Longmore got there before BIRO announced it - see Honour rewards coach Grobler yesterday in the paper (UK). The quaintest thing about this piece is the writer's touching faith that the post in Henley arrives before coaches such as Grobler, who is usually out before 8am with his crews) have breakfast. Sweet.....
- Radley College are inviting applications for a high-level Director of Rowing (UK). Closing date 24th May.
- Scott Riddell runs Ergfit Indoor Rowing Classes in Melbourne (Australia).
- A plea from a bereft sculler (UK) - "Lost - Pair of riggers and seat for a Stelph single scull. If you were at the Ball Cup this Sunday (Dorney) and have found an additional set of riggers and a seat for a Stelph sculling boat in your trailer please contact Rob Burnage (rob{AT}robburnage{DOT}com obvious antispam to be replaced). I believe that both seat and riggers are identified as Reading Rowing Club."
- The draw for Bedford Regatta (UK) is online.
- Tideway news (UK) - Thames21 will be cleaning up the river by Kew road bridge on Friday this week, and the Strand on the Green sailing club will clean up behind Oliver's Ait on Saturday. Not currently updated with the info, but the Thames21 website is a reasonable source of information. See this link for a map of the clean-up points on Friday.
- A website for Strokit Clothing (UK).
- And similarly, the latest PLA Notice to Mariners (Tideway, UK) includes details of the Twickenham and Richmond Regattas and the UL Hospital Bumps and how they're going to affect river use.
- Northwich RC's front page has the PDF poster for Northwich Regatta plus entry and doubling-up information. A new 1500m course is being offered on the Sunday as well as the original 1000m, with 500m sprints on Bank Holiday Monday. Entries close 21st May.
- Syndicated widely, news of Victor Mooney's boat sinking - the American wanted to row the old slave trade route Africa-America raise AIDS awareness. More about Mooney's boat - John Paul the Great - and the trip, on Mooney's website.
Sunday 7th May 2006
- Poor Doncaster RC (UK) have been forced to cancel their annual summer regatta, which should have taken place on 20th May. Some recent vandalism on the reconstruction of their boathouse has set back the work, which willl now not be completed on time. This means the area will still be a building site on regatta day, and too much of a safety risk. They are looking to reschedule later in the year. More details on the regatta website.
Saturday 6th May 2006
- Something I keep forgetting to put up - Rowing Australia have published their selected national teams for the senior, junior and U23 worlds this year. Links on the page lead to PDF format files. No Sally Robbins, we note. Not all the crews have been finalised yet, other than the women's openweight quad and double, and the men's pair of Drew Ginn and Duncan Free (Tomkins is on a break before he plans to return for Beijing).
- Friends of Andy Sudduth, US worlds rower, Olympic silver medallist and quintuple Champ M1x Head of the Charles winner in the 1980s, are asked to pray and send good thoughts his way as he undergoes major surgery on Monday. Andy has been battling cancer of the pancreas and liver since September.
Friday 5th May 2006
- Urgent UK update - version 3 of the Borne at Chiswick Regatta (6th May, UK) is up here not on the MAA website, a late release. Only minor changes but competitors should check as scratchings have meant a few crews get a bye into the next round.
- Information for Egham Regatta (UK, 25th June) now up online. Note that due to heavy oversubscription in 2005, they've slightly changed the events on offer and become a totally junior regatta, with J12 and WJ12 singles also removed. (This is definite, regardless of the front page of the site, which has not yet been changed). The rest is the same as usual. Their plans for oversubscription this year are clearly stated on the rowing information notice (Word format) - entrants please read carefully. Click on 'Events' for all other information/entry forms.
- Lots of new things from Oarsport (UK) - they're launching the NK Speedcoach XL in Britain, there is improved SpeedCoach Gold & SpeedCoach XL Communicator software available for download, new coloured protective bumpers and lanyards, and they assure me the NK Cadence T1 will shortly be restocked.
Thursday 4th May 2006
- For all those in the Thames Region (UK) who didn't get their ARA safety audits in on time, never fear, help is at hand. Your friendly TRRC has organised a fully online method of doing it, so read carefully. First visit the list of those who did submit their audits in time to check what TRRC thinks happened to your club. Then visit http://safety.thames-rrc.vorboss.net/ and follow the instructions. For the letter from the TRRC click here. Those who were efficient in the region are asked (if they have time and can be bothered) to kindly cut-and-paste to do it again online, since it will help future admin - not the slightest big obligatory. Now, here comes the important bit. Those who didn't send their audits in before, MUST do so by midday Sunday 14th May, or disaffiliation is threatened. You've been warned..
- A website for the Sv. Duje (Croatia), the Split regatta taking place this weekend with Croatian Olympians and crews of former Boat Race stalwarts included. It's the holiday for the patron saint of Split, and 'traditional bingo' - sounds like an unmissable combination. Two fat ladies in a double scull, anyone?
- Draw, map and instructions to crews for Birmingham Regatta (UK) are all up.
- Borne Regatta (UK) has put up version 2 of its draw together with safety/circulation info. Please note that there have been changes to the circulation this year so even experienced Tideway hands should check the links before they race. Version 3 of the draw will be up by Saturday with points changes and scratchings.
- BIRO (UK) have announced the first GB team of the summer, for the Munich World Cup. The eight and a second-string four are also going to Duisburg.
- London RC (UK) have a number of boats for sale. Bonza.
Wednesday 3rd May 2006
- There has been a change to the results from Wallingford Regatta (UK) - Pembroke College have been disqualified in S3 men's eights for being overpointed, leaving Oriel College (both Oxford) the winners. On the times given, though, it should be an interesting summer eights bumps week up on the Isis.
- From FISA, African rowers identified for the future.
- Since most of us not given any space to write about about the Redgrave-Pinsent Rowing Lake (Caversham, UK) by our sports editors, a BIRO press release will have to suffice, with a bit of engineering background from Land and Water UK on how it was all done (thanks RH).
- For those hunting useful bits of information on the ARA website (UK), you can get to the junior representatives through a laborious search in the regions. Go to the regions index page ond for each region, click on "more information on the activities" which will take you to either their homepage or the ARA representatives etc. list for the region. Better than nothing I 'spose. (Thanks GD for the help).
Tuesday 2nd May 2006

Monday 1st May 2006
- In past years the rowing community has held a World Rowing Day on or near May 1st, inspired by something similar nicked by Mike Sullivan from a surfing thread. The idea is that if you've rowed, erged, rigged, coached, planned rowing, watched it, read about it, thought about it or done anything else related to the sport in the 24 hours of May 1st in your time-zone, you can post it to the rec.sport.rowing newsgroup (Google version linked, can be accessed through any newsgroup reader), for the rest of the world to read about. It hasn't been discussed this year so I'm suggesting it again - and if you really don't have anything to do with rowing today, then why not write about your weekend instead. Posts can be during or after the date.
- From RSR, Neil Wallace has written a new 'Rowing Timer' for desk/laptop PCs, to time and produce reports of head/processional races, and with a version suitable for Pocket PCs/iPaqs etc. Information and programs downloadable from the Inverness RC downloads page - it's freeware, but Neil would obviously like feedback about his work from users.
- A reminder for those using Holme Pierrepont this summer (UK) that it has a results page for events taking place at the centre. This weekend it's BUSA, and the Saturday and Sunday PDF results files up there are from this year (though it's bloody hard to tell with the complete lack of a date on the file, filename or link!)
- Results from Wallingford Regatta (UK).
- From a while ago, the full bumps results for the Oxford City Bumps (UK). The host club, City of Oxford, are holding a fund-raising game of 'Aunt Sally' (traditional Oxfordshire stick-throwing sport) at their club 3-7pm on Saturday 3rd June, to raise money to install a lift and help the Oxford Adaptive Rowing Club.
- The Junior Rowing Commission (UK) will at its 13th May meeting discuss a) allowing girls to compete in sweep events at J15 and b) abolishing the school junior rule allowing those staying at school while 18+ to continue rowing junior until they're aged 19. Those with comments should be approaching their regional junior reps. Again, I can't find anything on the ARA website to tell me who these reps are, even using search and the sitemap. Grr....
- Jamco Times (USA) have been up to their usual tricks covering the Stanford-Cal Big Row this weekend with a mixture of audio/video/realtime graphics.
- The River and Rowing Museum (UK) has been undergoing a major gallery overhaul for their rowing collection, but is on track to re-open as planned on Saturday May 27th. More good news in the fact that since 1st April, all paid admissions tickets for the Museum are valid for an entire 12 months re-admission. Which means if you want to go now before the rowing gallery re-opens and look at the special exhibitions, or the Thames or Henley galleries, you can come back in for free later on any number of times within the following year. It's a fantastic value offer, especially with Henley Women's, Henley Royal, many local regattas and the 2006 World Rowing Championships taking place in the area this summer.
- Sportsbite updated.
