- USRowing has named Bryan Volpenheim (stroke of the Olympic champion US M8+) and Stacey Borgman (7th in the LW2x) as their Male and Female Athletes of the Year 2004.

- A Thames Regional Rowing Council letter to Tideway users, about the Salvage Association consultation exercise on navigation rules (UK). The SA notice is here (MS Word format) but the TRRC letter makes important suggestions as to how river users can influence the outcome of this potential navigation rule change. UK Tideway clubs and individuals are encouraged to respond.
- From FISA, 2004 Award winners (crews are Katrin Rutchow-Stomporowski and the GB Olympic men's 4-, coach of the year is the USA's Mike Teti.) Also, Tribute to Bill Webb (Australian medical commission member who had a fatal heart attack recently).

Monday 25th October 2004
- The Nottingham Autumn Head (UK) this weekend was cancelled due to high stream on the Trent.
- Adjusted and official 40th Head of the Charles results (USA) are up for all but four of the veteran singles events (available as unofficial). ASR Nereus (Dutch) won the championship women's eights, while Cambridge Univ BC (British) won the championship men's. Cindy Bishop (American) was again the women's singles champion, while Olympic silver medallist Juri Jaanson (Estonian) continued his awesome year with a win in the champ men's singles.
- This weekend the first "Reuss-Sprint" was held by RC Reuss Luzern (Switzerland), near the Kapell Bridge on Lake Luzern (not the Rotsee Lake where the international ML events are held). A report in German.

- This year's British Indoor Champs gave extra BUSA points to students, and the J14 and below events shifted from 1km/2km distances to the Dry Start Go-Race events (2/3/4/5 minutes depending on age category.)
- From FISA's website, Nine countries compete at La Grande Motte and Lipa and Pinsent nominated at Eurosport's 2004 Sportstar Awards. At the last, it turns out that over 50 Olympic medallists "that best represent the fundamental values of sport in Europe" were honoured in total - one male and one female per sport. - The Welsh Amateur Rowing Association is running three trials this year to identify talent towards Home Countries and (eventually) Commonwealth teams. Athletes who wish to be considered should register with Mike Hnatiw.

- (UK): The Olympic parade in London is set to start at 1:30pm from Piccadilly, and move steadily over to Trafalgar Square by 3:30pm, where there will be a general party before the Olympic and Paralympic teams go to Buckingham Palace for a reception tonight.
- Rob Griffiths, Leander Club webmaster, has put up photos and video clips of the Henley-on-Thames parade and receptions held yesterday (UK).

- A UK reminder that (this) Sunday 17th October is a TV rowing bonanza. First up is Channel 4 showing an edition of Scrapheap Challenge in which competing teams The Anoraks and Maximus have to build and race motorised sculling boats. Then the ITV network is showing the edition of the Midsomer Murders partly filmed at HRR this summer. From the online precis: "Barnaby and Scott investigate when ladies' man and rowing club member Guy Sweetman is found dead in the river during the annual Midsomer Regatta. The detectives soon discover the elite exterior of the club hides a world of money problems and sexual jealousy, and the victim had a number of enemies who might have wanted him dead. Guest starring Olympic rower Steve Redgrave, and Diana Quick."

- FISA are running a competition to win two guest tickets to the final BearingPoint World Cup Regatta in Lucerne next year. The entry involves completing a questionnaire about your involvement in rowing. The winners get hotel board, transfer and flights from anywhere in the world - but to make up for such generosity they do have to share a hotel with the FISA posse ;-).
- UK Tideway alert as posted on the Tideway Slug a few days ago: From 25th October for about 2 weeks divers will be doing an underwater survey of Kew and Barnes Bridges on the Tideway in London.
- The New Zealand Rowing Association has added a Regatta Safety Policy (MS Word doc), which adds extra rules for NZRA competitions.

- Jürgen Grobler is doing a lecture on Sunday 14th November at the River and Rowing Museum (Henley, UK). Title "Four men in a gold medal boat" and the subject is the trials and tribulations of the GB men's Olympic coxless four during the last year.
- A reminder that Brits can support the London 2012 Olympic campaign - the more people who sign up, the better our chances of convincing the IOC delegates that the country is behind the bid and it should be voted for.

- News from Rowing Canada Aviron that head coach Brian Richardson is leaving the organisation, to join the Canadian Olympic Committee as its Director of International Performance. National men's and women's coaches Mike Spracklen and Al Morrow are staying in place, and the search begins immediately for a new Canadian rowing performance director.

- At the Wallingford Long Distance Sculls, WRC sculler Paul Mattick beat eight-times champion Guy Pooley's 2002 record of 14:35 by one second while winning this year's men's race.
