- Rowing tragedy in Canada: "Kiran van Rijn, a sculler from Vancouver, BC, was training on Burnaby Lake, 22 September, 2005 when he fell out of his boat. It is reported that when rescued by his coach, he said that he had become dizzy, which caused him to tip out. The cause of death has not yet been reported." (From a rec.sport.rowing posting). It appears Kiran (a national champion) collapsed while being rescued and stopped breathing before the paramedics arrived.
- There's nothing in the online press about it, but these links are appropriate - Setting the lake on fire (a profile of him while doing a doctorate two years ago), In Memoriam on the Alberta Rowing Club website. Rowers beware - even if you avoid the bridge, this area will be full of work barges and other maintenance vessels.
- A (UK) reminder that Beauty and the Boats, an exhibition of art and artistry in early British rowing at the River & Rowing Museum in Henley, closes on October 2. Chris Dodd, the museum's rowing historian, says 'This selection of material from the Thomas E Weil collection is the most important show of rowing art since Thomas Eakins's rowing paintings were shown in Washington ten years ago. It's a must for anyone interested in rowing and the arts. Weil has spent 30 years collecting images, medals, trophies and ephemera of rowing, and the selection in Beauty and the Boats depicts the seminal years of our sport in its mother country'.

Pavel Rezvoy is picking up where his son's attempt to row the Indian Ocean left off, and is eight days out of the Cocos Islands (Australia) heading for Madagascar/the Seychelles. Leven Sinclair Brown is now 26 days into his attempt to row his ancestor Columbus' route from Spain to Trinidad while managing a stock portfolio, after a repairs-required restart. And Emmanuel Coindre is now nearly ninety days and more than halfway from Choshi (Japan) across the north-eastern Pacific to San Francisco. Completing the five ORS is tracking is Oliver Hicks, close to completing his W-E Atlantic row, and nearing Cornwall/NW France. This does not include Dom Mee, who left Canada recently to row W-E to Devon (UK).

- The UK Sculling League turns out to be the brainchild of a Tideway rower who is tells me he is not yet sure about whether it's a good idea or not. He says "of course the fact that we are thus far anonymous is a distinct short coming - that will be addressed asap". Perhaps the thoughts of UK rowers might be of interest to him, via the email contact on the site.

Interestingly, the official website doesn't yet have the results up, despite it being Monday night in NZ as I write this (pull your finger out, Rob!).

- Lots of new UK notices up, including some which may be matches for one another. Please note that it is your responsibility to read the anti-spam/anti-scam page and take appropriate steps to disguise your email address when posting notices. Make no assumptions about people answering your ads until you have checked out who they are.
- Sad UK news about Jonny Fraser, former Merchant Taylor's School and recently St. Peter's College Oxford student, drowned in India while rescuing a friend in trouble. He rowed in the SPC men's 2nd eight who went up one bump and one overbump this summer.
- A brief feature on the Dubai Rowing and Sculling Club (Dubai).
- And one on the Windsor Three's annual Thames row in memory of their schoolfriend and crewmate (UK).

- James Cracknell and Peter Craske have raised an impressive 2.2% of their £50,000 target for Access Sport so far. Well done chaps. A good cause, though, with a decent range of sports covered so far and 20 more clubs planned to be added in the new year.
- University College Worcester (UK) has now become the University of Worcester and has finished its rowing club website - at www.freewebs.com/ucwrowing/ currently. I like the sound of their "Destruction Derby" for singles and doubles in December.

- The organiser of the Rowers' Revenge Triathlon (UK) has been hijacked by his ISP not dealing properly with the domain name renewal. - The Swiss Rowing Federation is looking for a new National Junior Head Coach. Descriptions in German and English in PDF format.
- A website for the FISA Coastal Regatta in Noli on 2nd October - in Italian, French and English.
- Vesta Rowing Club (UK) have devised the inspirational Vesta International Coxswains' Challenge (24th September, Putney). As well as the less obvious coxing skills listed on the poster ('blade run, donut run') it includes Tideway steering, and rigging tests.
Budding/novice coxes don't take it too seriously though: there are a lot of things rowers pretend or wish they could get us to do (cooking/cleaning/clearing up after them, to quote only some of the most savoury.) Being a good cox is not really about gophering obsequiously: it boils down to 'can you help them win races?' and little else, though of course there are many skills involved in that alone. Why not turn it round and make them audition for us? I've often thought about devising a competition to see which club most deserves to have good coxes. Challenges could include how many times the rowers and coaches can actually give constructive feedback during a month (no point doing it during a week or an outing, as zero is not a statistically useful number in this context); a cox-lifting competition to stop your poor already-cold steersman's feet getting wet stumbling in and out of tidal rivers on wintry mornings; and a memory test to see how long it takes for the coach to forget the cox's name. Bonus points for clubs which think of getting proper cox-sized kit, actually teach the skills they want them to have, and occasionally say thank you for making someone turn out in vicious winter to freeze their a**e off for two hours coxing a grumpy crew without getting any exercise themselves - and then being binned before the head because the captain's significant other wants to steer in the race. By the way nearly all the UK/US veteran crews I have ever coxed are laudable exceptions to all these grumbles. (If they aren't, I haven't been back.) - So, if any young learning coxes want to be cheered up and bring on their careers, go and steer a good masters' boat, they'll make it well worth your while and you'll feel a valuable member of the crew. RQ

No comment in the FISA press release about lightweight eights....
- I did a long-ish feature for the Telegraph before the Worlds, about two of the British team. Annoyingly, they never got round to printing it. So here it is.
- James Cracknell's going to be a busy boy over Christmas - he's rowing the Atlantic with TV presenter Ben Fogle. There's an interestingly wrong version of the Pinsent/Cracknell pair story. I wonder how easy Crackers will find it to come back after 18-24 months off full-time training, if he decides, mid-ocean, that Beijing is worth a shot. The Ocean Rowing Society page has links, news and a lot more about ocean rowing as well as the previous races. The official website is less informative, no list of entrants yet, for instance.
Sunday 4th September 2005
- Sunday live-written RQ commentary from the Worlds second finals day.
Saturday 3rd September 2005
- Important message from FISA re: start times for Sunday's racing. They've decided to try and avoid wind and thunderstorms forecast for the middle of Sunday, so are beginning racing 3/4 hour earlier than planned and squashing the B finals up more. A finals will start at 9:30am local time (GMT+9), for anyone intending to watch the race tracker or the online streaming (outside Europe). The updated timetable can be found here as a PDF file.
- From the Worlds - live-written RQ commentary.
- An announcement from FISA on Saturday morning: "Based on the recommendation of the FISA Athletes Commission, the FISA Council determined that race times recorded on regatta courses with a significant water mass flow will not be considered as World Best Times.
Based on this principle, the race times recorded here at the 2005 World Rowing Championships in Gifu will not be considered as World Best Times and the World Best Times up until these Championships will be returned to the record books.
The FISA Council and relevant Commissions will start a study to determine the threshold level of water mass flow for future FISA Events."
- For those who aren't already aware, FISA have said they will be awarding a full medal set where possible, so the men's pair-plus and lightweight eight all get medals, wherever they finish.
- Worlds coverage of various types on FISA, NLRoei (Netherlands), Row2k (USA), Canottaggio Vero (Italy), Rudern1 (Germany), and various national federations are keeping their team stories updated.
- There's an online radio interview with Mahe Drysdale (done before his final) in which he reveals his eclectic taste in music including that classic rowing choice 'Eye of the Tiger'. Niiiiiice.
- On a much more serious note, I saw a newsfeed a little while ago which said that 39-year-old Captain Mike Seares, MBE, an RAF Jaguar pilot and former British junior cox, was found dead at his Oxfordshire home on Wednesday. No details of the cause yet released. I suspect from his age a lot of current British rowers may have overlapped with him, and this is clearly tragic news. The full bulletin is reproduced in the Norwich Evening News (UK).
- Latest on Hacker and that log - Tree stops Hacker - Fin broke out of the boat (Rudern1, Germany, translated into English).
Friday 2nd September 2005
