2005-6 winter season
An astonishing ten pots at the Upper Thames Head in October, followed by three pennants at the Fours Head (one after a recalculation by the race committee). The Indoor Champs were particularly successful: silver for Richard Chambers in the men's BUSA lightweight event, with bronze in U23 lightweights into the bargain. And silver for Hugo Lee in the openweight U23s. Then on to the GB trials, with one pair in the top ten (also top U23 men's pair), and Kirsty Miles the fourth U23 women's sculler. The winter camp was a bit of a disaster - back at uni already, everyone trekked down to Wimbleball to find that the wind had followed them, and instead of seat trials on the lake it was sploshing about in Tiverton Baths.

2004-5 winter
It was business as usual down at the Bowbridge boathouse, with racing at Henley Fours and Sculls (1 pot), the Fours Head (1 pennant) and Wallingford Head (a mere 7 pots). Then the second GB trials, followed by Wimbleball and then the spring heads. More wins at Henley Fours (2 pots)

GB trials
Most of the top Brookes boys were excused attendance at the first GB trial, after appearing at the Under-23's, World University Regatta or both. Matt Tucker was top Brookes lad, finishing 31st in the open men's trial, while Will Hoodless was 13th in the lightweight men's category. Vicky Myers came 23rd in the women's trial, a few places ahead of Taurus babe Carla Ashford.

Nat Champs
Two silvers (M2- and M8+), one bronze (M4+) and one 4th (also M4+) for the Brookes squad. Another day at the office.

BUSA Regatta, May Bank Holiday weekend, 2004
All the students will be making an appearance in Nottingham as usual - see the BUSA rowing site for more. This year there are Alumni and Corporate Sprint races on the Bank Holiday too: M4+, W4+, Mixed8+ and single sculls. The student events over the weekend are now closed, but anyone wanting to race in the Alumni Regatta should ring Nigel Mayglothling on 0115 951 5516 and see if he can still fit you into the draw.

European Universities Regatta, Milan, April 2004
The top crew is off to this annual knees-up in Milan, a traditional Italian mixture of dodgy lane-allocation, questionable umpiring and a total lack of start pontoons. The whole lot is designed to leave local boys CUS Pavia on top, whatever the real outcome of the race. But it's good practice for racing bloody fast Americans in the Temple Cup.... Pictures and results should eventually be posted on Canottaggio Vero.

HORR and WHORR, March 2004
The Women's Head had the good weather this year, and went off fine, with Oxford Brookes' crew finishing 13th just behind Durham and a bit further back from Osiris. The crew contained four new members from Bristol University, after both clubs realised they needed too many subs to race, and so merged. Despite being completely legitimate as the crew had withdrawn from the BUSA pennant, it took the WHORR committee some time to realise this, and the result has not yet been reinstated on its webpage.
The Men's Head was a different matter - massive 60-mph gusting winds on the Saturday made the organisers cancel before everyone got on the water (they were concerned about marshalling, rather than racing). So with the event officially off, a number of clubs held an impromptu race after waiting an hour for the tide to drop and the water to calm a bit. Out of the 23 crews racing, Oxford Brookes I finished fifth (17:31.8, elite), II was fifteenth (18:22.3, senior 2 and BUSA), IV was eighteenth (18:29.2, senior 2 and U2) and III at twentysecond (18:43.6, senior 3 and U2). Unfortunately the IC BUSA eight was seventh in 17:44.7, and IC's top crew won in 16:55.8, not far outside the record.
